Sweet Jones

Emerging Hot Sauce Brand

"SWEET JONESIN" PACKAGING DRAFTS #1
Contracted from the creator and culinary chemist of this emerging hot sauce brand to design new brand packaging.

The first packaging draft of this sauce brand label originates from his name, "Sweet Jonesin". This was a complete overhaul from his original label design. The objective was to utilize his facial image as the main element and taglines from his original label design. His image is where it all began. The glasses became the alternate color and act as an identifier for future flavors. Above are few drafts experimenting with contrasting colors from the sauce in the bottle and explored a transparent approach to some parts of the label. Also, collaborated with printers as I was unfamiliar with food label substrates to protect from moisture from refrigeration.

The final result for the first draft of the label design is bottom right version. The original ideas of the glasses representing the future flavors and the step and repeat background remains today as the final today's final design.

The Challenges:
  • The bottle label was 3-1/2" high with a small circumference of high posing a challenge for space and design.

  • The nutrition label needed to be reformatted to accommodate FDA requirements in a small space.

Sweet Jones Hot Sauce Brand - Final Packaging

2 years later, this hot sauce brand was revisited with a partner and brand advocate, Howard A. Lim, owner of "HOW Creative". Howard had a greater vision for an impactful strategy with a new brand initiative to market in broader channels. I collaborated along side his team from Cascade Virtual for web influence, overall branding elements and design. I was solely responsible for all packaging elements that would influence multiple touch points for this brand.

The New Changes:
  • Brand name changed from "Sweet Jonesin" to "Sweet Jones",
for simplicity and easy name recognition

  • Relabeled on a larger flask shape and size bottle setting him apart from other hot sauce brands

  • New modernized logo using a script font for that personalized homemade appeal

  • Tiled patterned heart was added in these latest designs that can be used as secondary element as an identity mark as well as a future fashion style application.

Color Study- Use of 3 colors:

Managing the control of print quality with 3 spot colors to identify the flavors was key to consistency for print packaging, future apparel in regards to screen printing, and other collateral. In order to achieve a variety of colors, 3 PMS color using transparencies of black were used to provide a visually harmonious color palette for print consistency. This method is applicable for all color variations.

Together we developed and created a brand that evokes emotion on retail shelves and online purchases.

The Takeaways:

A rewarding experience and collaboration proved to be a success. My concepts, ideas, and final designs were well received by Howard A. Lim and his team.
